Ponta do Ouro, often spelled as Ponta do Oura, is a quaint little village situated 15km north of the Kosi Bay border post between South Africa and Mozambique. It means Point of Gold named after the many Portuguese settlers that mistakenly thought that this area was rich in gold. It is a popular scuba diving destination with easy access to its nearby spectacular dive sites and plenty of resorts, guesthouses and chalets. Since roads aren't paved, a 4 wheel drive car is needed to get to this, in sand dunes and with casuarinas trees, decorated town.
A popular excursion besides scuba diving and snorkeling is a swimming tour with the many spinner and common dolphins that live in the bay. Its inland tropical forests and pristine dune forest houses many other wildlife including monkeys. Spotting local fishermen might interest you to book one of the deep sea fishing tours to fish for marlin, tuna and sailfish. Its many white golden beaches that are lined up all the way north to the Maputo Elephant Game Reserve and south to the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park offer for excellent remote beaching and are the stage of the annual turtle hatching (Oct-Dec). Other interesting sights nearby are Mozambique's capital Maputo, the country Swaziland and national parks nearby such as the Tembe Elephant Park.
The calm bay of Ponta do Ouro is protected from the rough open ocean by a narrow sandbank providing for quiet, rich and relaxed scuba waters. Its reefs are known throughout the world for its variety and dense marine life that inhabits the most colorful corals. On top of this, the bays surrounding Ponta do Ouro are blessed with seasonal visits of whale sharks, whales and manta rays. It offers a great atmosphere for tourists interested in scuba diving, snorkeling or just as a relaxed and beautiful holiday.
