Inhaca Island is a small subtropical in coral fringed island just east of Maputo and a popular getaway for sail boats, yachts, dive charters and day trips. Separated from Maputo by the Baia de Maputo and Ponta Punduine peninsula, this Natural Reserve (since 1976) offers excellent scuba diving sites, superb snorkeling, rich coral reefs and plenty of large and smaller marine fish. The interior of Inhaca Island and neighbor Portuguese Island is rich in tropical forest and bush land, offering excellent multiple day hiking tracks with views across pristine Delagoa Bay. Spear fishing and game fishing for dorado, marlin and sailfish are popular attractions at the outer reefs. Inhaca Island is the place to be for some adrenaline such as banana boating, jet skiing, kayaking and para-sailing. You can also hire mountain bikes, book light house tours and visit the Marine Biological Centre. Other local settlements besides Inhaca are Inguane, Ridjeni, Nhaquene and Tobia. After a twenty minutes flight or after a beautiful two hour long ferry trip leaving from Porto de Pesca in the weekends, you will arrive at this magnificent paradise.
Its coral reefs and magnificent golden beaches are fantastic. Expect to find dolphins, manta rays in summer, barracuda and plenty of sharks. Snorkelers will love the shallow inshore waters of Santa Maria and near the lighthouse; while more experienced divers can enjoy one of its wicked wrecks or drift dives (especially at ebb tide). Although one of Mozambique's most touristic destination, it is still a laid-back and exotic African island surrounded with the warm waters and beauties of the Indian Ocean.
